With the changing trends, a remarkable change has also been observed in the furniture as a new term has been coined on that basis which is ‘modern furniture’. This term is pretty confusing, as gradual changes in furniture patterns have been observed since the World War II, and in the last few decades there has been a snowballing transition in furniture styles.

Current furniture models are unlike than those of just a few years ago. Contemporary furniture today uses a wide assortment of avant-garde materials like vinyl, tubular aluminum alloys, cane and jute.

It is not just in the construction materials, which have undergone transition in modern furniture but also their styles, have undergone a sea change. Modern furniture has better unusual shape than their forerunners – the sharp straight look is gone; curves and abstract lines are in.

These days no more wood is used rather vinyl is in. There are no more dark curve with mildewed wooden smells; they have been swapped by bright colors with patterns as varied as butterflies, flowers and even religious motifs and abstract shapes. Browns and blacks are no longer to be seen as abundantly as turquoises, tangerines, crimsons and chartreuses. Similarly, wrought iron is no longer used. It has been exchanged by tubular alloys of aluminum and steel. This changeover is chiefly due to new furniture-manufacturing know-how of the past decades. Machine-made furniture molds can easily craft any shape of furniture that may be desired.

Current days furniture in homes is often related to a representation of the owners’ identities. Nowadays indeed every family wants a unique style of furniture, and they don’t mind the cost. People are enthusiastic to go to any lengths to make their furniture different from ‘the Joneses’.

People are customizing the furniture patterns and want designers to conceptualize new styles for them. The more different the style from the norm, the more chance it has to be approved. Colors, patterns, curves and even utility have undergone an massive change.

It is because of their contemporary design patterns that several furniture architects have gained wide repute; to name a few Herman Miller, Florence Bassett, Hans Knoll and Charles and Ray Eames. They are initiators in various new designs of furniture, which include modular sofas and highly intangible lamps.

As it is furniture today is highly priced as compared to its predecessors and there is more machine work rather than handwork in the furniture Though this helps in reducing the total cost but the design is all that appends to the price.
